Is it best to train a bunch of swordsmen or to train more advanced troops? I usually just do swordsmen because they're cheaper but I don't know if they're that good.

Swords and cataputs. Forget about the rest unless you have lots of gold and lumber.

Stick to swords and pults. They are the only thing worth using. As far as i know, none of the other units actually have any of the bonuses that they say they have yet.
